Nowadays, with development of modern intelligent transportation systems, the automatic incident detection systems become one of the essential requirements in metropolitan areas. Reliable real-time detection with a report for location, moment and severity of incident can save life and reduce the costs.

Different traffic information sources and various algorithms represent a wide range of methods for incident detection. In this study, we want to survey the traditional and novel methods proposed for incident detection systems and finally we suggest the most efficient and most effective method for realization in Iran which has consistency to the present ITS structure in the country.
