In this paper, a method for detection of wrong-way driving based on video image processing is proposed. In the proposed method, virtual loops are supposed in the width of a designated passage or roadway, then direction of vehicle movement is detected based on the fullness or the emptiness of these virtual loops.
This algorithm detects this abnormal behavior in the roadway without the need to track objects and, to use time consuming methods based on particle filter. As a result, the proposed approach will have an appropriate speed to implement real time. Also, this system has this ability to perform the license plate reader program and to record vehicle data of at-fault drivers at the same time, due to the need for common hardware.
